ENJOYING A BETTER LIFE IN YUCATÁN
Couple
chooses Mérida as their home due to its
being "less expensive"
After having lived in the capital of Yucatán
for eight years, Fred and Jan Morgan, from the United States,
have seen a dizzying and dramatic growth in the foreign population that
chooses Yucatan as a second home .
They estimate that as a consequence of
the economic crisis in the United States, the number of American
citizens who decide to reside in the Peninsula has increased by 20% over
the past year and a half, due to safety conditions, kindliness of the
people, and low prices in food as well as in the real estate industry
which are found here .
The foreign couple assures that they no longer
even miss the snow during the winter season and now travel to the United
States on vacation to be with family or friends .
"We have a better life in Yucatán and it is
less expensive than in the United States," says Fred, a Chicago Chief,
whose story on his experiences was published by the Diario .
The arrival of people both from the United
States and Canada opened up the entrepreneurial spirit of this couple
and in 2008 the Morgans created The Gold Book, a directory in
English which offers a range of services for residents .

Local Service for Foreigners
A directory in English - the success of two
entrepreneurs ,
Fred and Jan Morgan, a couple from the United
States, took their entrepreneurial spirit and in 2008 created a family
business - The Gold Book , a directory in English which offers a
range of local services to foreign residents.
The directory is free of charge and is
arranged alphabetically according to service category. Each listing
contains the business addresses and phone numbers of companies, which
facilitates not only the reading of the directory, but also helps in
locating the companies offering their services.
They sell the advertising, edit the directory
in English and then distribute it free of charge among their foreign
friends, in hotels, restaurants, libraries or just hand them out on the
street.
The Morgans
distributed 4,000 copies with each of their 2009 and 2010 editions. Now,
in 2011 they intend to increase the number of distribution copies to
5,000. The next printing will be in 2012 and "because it is a useful
directory", they hope to again increase the quantity of distribution
copies.
"Our goal is to help those people who need a
service or business, but do not know Spanish," says Jan.
In the next directory they will offer short
advertising messages so that a greater number of businesses have the ava ilability
and opportunity to offer their services to the foreign community.
In the eight years they have been in Yucatán,
the Morgans have seen an enormous growth in the foreign population that
chooses Yucatán as a second home.
The interview took place in the couple’s home,
with the help of translator, Lily Cortés Navarrete. For more
